What Grade Do I Need on My Final?

Plan your finals target using your current grade, desired grade, and final exam weight.

Final exam planning starts with three numbers

You need your current class grade, the overall grade you want, and the percentage weight of the final exam.

The calculator solves for the missing final exam score and tells you whether the target is realistic.

Method

Required final = (Target grade - Current grade x Current work weight) / Final weight

Example: If you have an 85%, want a 90%, and the final is worth 20%, you need 110% on the final. That target may require extra credit.

Common mistakes

  • Entering the final exam weight as a decimal instead of a percent.
  • Forgetting that a target above 100% may not be possible without extra credit.
  • Using a current grade before the gradebook is fully updated.

FAQ

What if I need more than 100%?

Your target may not be possible unless extra credit or another grade change is available.

What if I need less than 0%?

You have already secured the target based on the numbers entered.
