How to Calculate GPA with Credits
Use credits, grade points, and quality points to calculate term GPA and cumulative GPA.
GPA is credit-weighted
Courses with more credits affect your GPA more. A 4-credit course has twice the GPA impact of a 2-credit course.
Formula
GPA = Total quality points / Total credits
Quality points are grade points multiplied by credits. A 3-credit class with an A earns 12 quality points on a 4.0 scale.
Common mistakes
- Treating every class as equal even when credit values differ.
- Counting pass/fail, incomplete, or withdrawal grades when they do not affect GPA.
- Confusing weighted high school GPA with college GPA.
