Common Grade Curve Methods
A points-added curve gives every student the same number of extra points. A scale-to-top-score curve makes the highest score equal 100 and scales other scores proportionally.
A target-score curve finds how many points would need to be added to move one score to a target, then applies that same point change.
Worked Examples
If your original score is 82% and the curve adds 8 points, your curved grade is 90%.
If your original score is 82% and the highest class score is 92%, a scale-to-top curve gives 82 / 92 x 100 = 89.1%.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which curve method should I use?
Use the method your teacher describes. If they simply add a fixed number of points, choose Add points. If the top score becomes 100, choose Scale top score to 100.
Is this a bell curve calculator?
This calculator covers common class curves like added points and scaling. A true bell curve depends on the full class score distribution.
Can a curve lower my grade?
Some formulas can lower grades, but most classroom curves are designed to raise or preserve scores. Ask your teacher which method applies.
